Frankfort is indeed our capital city, but it is filled with small town charm and a relaxed pace. The city offers history, natural beauty, a visit-worthy downtown, and many great restaurants and destinations to check out. In fact, the town makes for a great day trip or weekend getaway in Kentucky. Stop by Gibby’s On Broadway for a tasty meal and then spend as much time as you like at Poor Richard’s Books, just across the street. Frankfort is unique as a capital because it is truly a small town and maintains that charm and pace of life. By population, Frankfort doesn't even crack the top ten of largest cities in Kentucky. But it does still have plenty to offer, including Broadway - a small town street in Kentucky that has many great spots to visit.
One stop on this street that you must experience is Gibby's On Broadway.
This local favorite restaurant in Frankfort opened in 1995 and offers some of the best lunch and dinner in the state. It's somewhat unassuming from the outside, but be sure to track down this corner restaurant for a memorable meal.

When you walk inside Gibby's, you'll likely have a short wait to order, which you'll need to figure out what you want to eat.
Both the lunch and dinner menus are large and offer a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, burgers, entrees, and everything in between. The atmosphere inside is relaxed and nostalgic with plenty of seating, or you can take your meal to-go.

If you'd like to try a classic Kentucky Hot Brown, Gibby's is the place to do so.
As one of the most popular menu items, it's almost required for everyone to try this local favorite at least once. Gibby's truly offers one of the best Hot Browns in the state, so definitely consider ordering it.
After you're full from a meal at Gibby's, take a stroll along Broadway. You can visit the Capitol Building, which is also right there, but be sure to make your way to Poor Richard's Books, right across the street.
This local bookstore has thousands of titles in a classic bookstore setting. It's been serving the community for over 30 years and is also a favorite Frankfort destination.
The first floor of Poor Richard's Books is stuffed with shelf after shelf of books to browse.
This indpendent book shop specializes in Kentucky titles but carries a little bit of everything. They also have a section for the kids and are bound to have a book that you just have to add to your collection.
If you have the time, head upstairs and prepare to be overwhelmed by an incredible collection.
Up here you can search for real buried treasure in the form of written words. Any book lover is sure to fall in love with this place. And you can wrap up your visit with an iced latte or other drink of choice.
