Kentucky is a great state for animal lovers, as you can experience a wide variety in the wild or at one of many zoos and destinations around the state. If you happen to have a fascination with reptiles, then you may be surprised to learn that the Bluegrass State is home to a little-known zoo with one of the largest reptile collections in the country. The Kentucky Reptile Zoo is a non-profit roadside destination in the adventurous town of Slade. Slade may be better known for its hiking trails and natural beauty, but this little zoo is definitely worth checking out when you're in the area.
The zoo is a combination of indoor and outdoor displays. Outside, you'll find an aquatics area and alligator pond, so be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.
There are also three buildings that house different species of reptiles. These rooms are not air-conditioned (reptiles are cold-blooded and therefore prefer warmer temperatures), so keep this in mind if you visit in the middle of summer. It can get quite hot in there!
As with many zoos, the reptiles are not simply on display, but are a part of a larger education and research program. While exploring or taking a tour, you'll learn all about what makes each reptile unique and why it's crucial that we work to conserve these species.
One of the most fascinating things they do at the Kentucky Reptile Zoo is snake venom extraction. The public is welcome to stop by and watch it happen, which typically takes place at 1 p.m.
The venom collected is used in research and development for medical purposes. Believe it or not, it’s likely already in a prescription that's been given to you or a loved one. This venom has a wide variety of uses, including in medications used to treat heart disease, cancer, pain management, and other conditions.
If you’re nervous about being in close proximity to these venomous creatures, fear not - the professionals at Kentucky Reptile Zoo are highly experienced and the safety of visitors is always a top priority. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about these scaly creatures in a secure and highly educational facility.
The Kentucky Reptile Zoo is open to the public year round, with extended hours from Memorial Day through Labor Day and shortened seasonal hours during the off-season. You can check out their current schedule here.
