Many trails throughout Kentucky are well-known, often traversed, and definitely worth checking out. Of course, everyone has a different comfort level when it comes to hiking through the woods, but if you’re ready for a little bit more of an adventure than a typical trail, then check out the hike to Copperas Falls in Red River Gorge. This incredible trail takes you into the woods, along a creek, and even includes a stunning waterfall, when the flow is right. This wonderfully remote trail is all about the journey and is totally worth checking out.
Copperas Falls is an unmarked, yet still fairly popular trail within Red River Gorge.
You can actually search for it in Google Maps for directions, and they will lead you very close to the trailhead. You'll just have to look for the parking lot in the area on 715, and the trailhead is to your left if you're facing away from the road.
This is a favorite trail in Red River Gorge because it truly is special and unique, compared to other hikes here. As you head into the woods, the variety of plant and wildlife, as well as the incredible natural scenery, feels a little like a walk through the jungle.
As with many hikes in Red River Gorge, you will definitely come across some interesting rock formations along the trail. Keep in mind that the trail is not officially marked, but most agree that it is relatively easy to follow the path of the many who have come before you.
Most of the trail goes back and forth along a creek, which means you'll want to prepare for your feet to get wet. If you have children that are used to hiking, this trail may just become a favorite on a hot day, thanks to the tempting creek and its cool water.
Since the trail is named Copperas Falls, you'd expect to find a waterfall, and you very well might. The 40-foot waterfall is the climax of the hike - if it's flowing. You may not get to experience a rush of water coming over the cliff, although there is usually at least a trickle.
But it honestly doesn't matter, as this trail, the cave, and the pool of water in this particular section make the hike exciting even if the waterfall is dried up during your visit.
The cave that has formed under the waterfall is also a unique feature of the hike and provides a one-of-a-kind view of the surroundings. From this vantage point, it's easy to see why this is a beloved trail for avid hikers.
Even if you're not an expert hiker, this trail is moderate enough that most people can enjoy it. The journey along the creek takes you through the wild and wonderful forest of Kentucky, and if you're lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the falls, that's just an added bonus on an already incredible hiking trail.
Whether or not you see a rushing waterfall, the hike to Copperas Falls is perfect for a little adventure and a journey through a beautiful area of Kentucky. Have you hiked this hidden trail in Red River Gorge? What did you think? Let us know in the comments!
