I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
What qualities make a successful small business owner? There’s an indefatigable drive and tireless work ethic. Vision — seeing the possibility and potential in the most unlikely of places. Gumption and grit; not giving up and being willing to work hard. And then, of course, there’s personality. The most successful small business owners know that community support is key, and they work around the clock to gain the trust and admiration of their customers and locality. Put all of these attributes together, and you have Rob Ramsey, owner of Ramsey’s Diner in Lexington, Kentucky.
Interested to learn about other unique American small businesses? Our Small Business Spotlight series highlights the often-overlooked work of small business owners across the country, from Maine to Southern California.
In 1989, Rob Ramsey found himself recently out of college and knee-deep in the restaurant industry. He worked for several restaurant companies and transferred throughout the southeast opening new stores, taking his knowledge and experiences with him.
Ultimately, Rob found himself in Lexington, Kentucky, where a shuttered coffee shop got the wheels turning in his mind. Instead of a vacant business, Rob saw potential; he saw, as it were, Ramsey's Diner.
In addition to the desire to pour his experiences and knowledge into his very own restaurant, Ramsey's MO for starting his own business was also quite practical. "My inspiration at the time was to not have to move again -- particularly that my daughter had just been born," he says.

The restaurant was a success. With a menu of Southern favorites that include family recipes Ramsey worked hard to perfect, this diner is the kind of restaurant folks want to visit.
The fried green tomatoes and catfish sandwiches are two customer favorites, as is Ramsey's rendition of the classic Kentucky hot brown.
But the food is merely one ingredient to this restaurant's success. Explains Ramsey, "My original success was from hard work, lots of hours dedicated to seeing everyone was treated the way I would have wanted to be treated."
Another ingredient? An offbeat sense of humor. With four locations across Lexington, Ramsey's proves that great food and great service is a winning combination -- and that filtered Insta posts and marketing gimmicks aren't always what folks want.
Going back to basics -- say, circa 1989 basics, perhaps -- sets Ramsey's apart in a delightfully refreshing way.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Ramsey continually strives to make his restaurants as accessible and accommodating as possible. In October 2021, Ramsey's Diner became Lexington's first dementia-friendly restaurant. Their staff completed training provided by community organization Dementia Friendly Lexington on how to recognize and care for customers with dementia.
During this training, staff learned to prioritize patience, ask yes or no questions, provide visual cues, and use positive language to encourage customers with dementia.

Of course, this is all part of Ramsey's community-focused ethos. In addition to the dementia certification, "Ramsey’s tries to contribute to the Lexington community in many ways. We donate meals and gift certificates to schools, churches, youth groups and many charities," explains Ramsey.
Because when it all comes down to it, we're all in this together. "I know who made me successful (the community and my employees)," says Ramsey, "and I try to return it whenever possible."
Ramsey’s Diner has been celebrated for its community ethos, being featured in numerous publications and media outlets:
But when its 15 minutes of fame pass, Ramsey’s Diner will remain as steadfast as ever, proudly supporting its community and earning repeat customers for its warm and welcoming atmosphere — and darn delicious food.
