I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. I have lived elsewhere twice, but keep coming back. I'm a video editor and freelance writer who enjoys watching people wearing University of Louisville uniforms excel at sports, scaling the faces of large rocks, and hanging out with my border collie/laborador/cattle dog mutt thingy that I have.
Autumn brings with it a plethora of seasonal activities: haunted houses, hay rides, corn mazes, apple orchards. But pumpkins are like the king of fall. They have lattes and breads and pretty much any kind of food item named after them, pumpkin patches are packed, and people get creative and carve them into all kinds of jack-o-lanterns. However, no one can top the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular that takes place in a Louisville park every October.
The event will be taking place in Iroquois Park for the fourth year in a row. This year, it will be held October 13 through November 6. It’s open daily from dusk until 11 P.M. Friday and Saturday nights, it stays open until midnight.
There are more than 5,000 illuminated pumpkins along the 1/4-mile trail. The pumpkins rotate on a weekly basis, so you will have a different experience each time you go.
Artists prepare the pumpkins by first drawing the image onto it before meticulously carving it into the final product. Then the finished pumpkins are categorized into themes and presented with music.
Louisville Metro Parks and Louisville Parks Foundation produce the event, along with a multimedia production company called Passion For Pumpkins. They are the masterminds behind turning this trail in Iroquois Park into an illuminated art show.
On Sunday through Thursday, tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $9 for children. Friday and Saturday, the costs are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, and $12 for children. Proceeds benefit the Louisville Parks Foundation.
The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is a unique event appealing to all ages. It’s a great thing to take kids to, but would also make a fun date night. For more information, click here.
Has anyone ever been to the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular? What was the best pumpkin?
