Red River Gorge is often hailed as the Grand Canyon of Kentucky, but did you know there’s another miniature grand canyon in the Bluegrass? It’s true! Breaks Interstate Park in Breaks, Kentucky, is colloquially referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the South” — though in our humble opinion, it’s every bit as beautiful as its Arizona namesake.
This is the Grand Canyon. It's one of the largest and longest canyons on Earth, and one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. A playground for outdoor enthusiasts, the Grand Canyon is also a beloved destination for waterfall chasers, as it's home to some of the country's finest falls. A bucket-list destination for most, this Arizona attraction is every bit as extraordinary as its reputation suggests.
The Breaks is mostly known for its incredible views and a history that includes Daniel Boone and a gorge that was slowly carved out over time by the now Russell Fork River. It's a true vision to behold that; a geological marvel known to render onlookers completely speechless.
Many of the 25 miles of hiking trails throughout the park offer views like this, so be sure to bring along comfortable shoes. And as you can imagine, these views are jaw-dropping all year long!
When a "grand canyon" is mentioned in Kentucky, it's usually in the context of Red River Gorge -- but The Breaks is truly just as incredible. Perhaps it's the park's location that makes it lesser known and underrated -- but it is still a very worthy destination in our beautiful state. The park is spread throughout both Kentucky and Virginia, so you'll find its features on both sides of the state line.
Make no mistake about it, however: the park's main feature, Breaks Canyon, is five miles long and ranges from 830 to 1,600 feet deep. It's commanding and captivating, filling onlookers with immense awe and wonder.
