It is not very hard to find a Mexican restaurant in most Kentucky towns, but finding mind blowing Mexican food is a little more difficult. We are quite fond of Hispanic cuisine, and really enjoy fresh foods prepared in the authentic tradition. It takes a special touch to hang onto tradition and maintain the perfect taste in your product. When it happens, you experience melt in your mouth food that is more addictive than… whatever you find addictive.
13. Casa Grande on 105 Belmont Ave in Somerset
The décor is colorful and very decorative with festive seating. They have a daily lunch special, including the occasional tacos for $1 each, which are way better than Taco Bell. They also have delicious shredded chicken Chimichangas and a Burrito Grande that is absolutely wonderful. The food is served in generous portions and you will never experience "wilted" lettuce here, which is always good.
12. El Jimador Real Mexican on 1009 Granite Drive in Bardstown
This place has a very versatile menu that includes grilled steak that is wonderful. The chips and salsa are divine, along with all their homemade salsas and sauces. The portions, as you can see, are beyond generous and can easily feed two people.
11. Acapulco on 8101 Connecter Drive in Florence
From their complimentary chips and salsa to appetizers and combos, this is a great Tex Mex restaurant in the area. You will find friendly service, generous portions and freshly prepared foods. (Plus, the homemade sauce is incredible.)
10. El Rio Brava on 6815 Alexandria Pike in Alexandria
It has been said you can close your eyes, point to anything on their menu, and you will leave full, satisfied, and with a to-go box for lunch the next day. Their chimichanga is delicious, as are their chips and homemade salsa.
9. El Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant at 34 Carothers Road in Newport
If you like authentic Mexican, you will love El Rio Grande. The food is served spiced as specified and the portions are large enough for a to-go box.
8. El Tapatio on 211 Towne Drive in Elizabethtown
This is great authentic Mexican food and the service is always friendly and informative if you are unsure about what to try. The spinach quesadilla and Pollo Feliz are both incredible. This restaurant is so good it has people who come back weekly for their Mexican food fix. Portions are also very generous and tend to provide plenty for take-home.
7.Guaca Mole on 9921 Ormsby Station Road in Louisville
This is not your Tex Mex style food, but it is authentic Mexican. The guacamole is absolutely incredible, as you will find most things are on the menu. The portions are a decent size and the staff is quite friendly and helpful. The only down side is that chips and salsa must be purchased, unlike many other restaurants where they are provided freely.
6. La Antigua on 1002 Lexington Road in Georgetown
This place has been deemed the absolute BEST place to have Mexican food around the Georgetown area via the residents and patrons. They have large portions of nicely spiced beef, chicken, pork or vegetarian dishes, and the sauces are just perfect. La Antigua is a must dine experience if you are nearby.
5. Sol Azteca on 613 S. Main Street in Franklin
The food here is very fresh and served as you would expect; hot, spicy and delicious. The chips and salsa are great, as is the steak con carne. If you like Margaritas, you will find these most appealing, though a little on the strong side.
4.. Las Penas on 180 Parkway Plaza Loop in Whitesburg
The service is always great here and the food is fresh, hot and delicious. They tend to open the doors even if a foot of snow is on the ground, and still provide quick service with quality food. Las Penas has daily specials like Chili Verde, Polleno, and Burritos, along with a unique green sauce rice that is really tasty. Some residents say this is the best Mexican place within 100 miles.
3. Mariachis on 515 Stanford Street in Lancaster
Service is always done with a smile here and the food is awesome. The Mole sauce really stands out as a tasty, along with the very fresh chili rellano. The pepper is not mushy like some places and they use the perfect amount of cheese. This is a must-visit for the Lancaster area.
2. Montoyas on 2507 Chelsea Drive in Fort Mitchell
This has been deemed the best Mexican food in the northern area via residents. The Chimichito and the shrimp fajitas are both amazing, along with the variety of tacos, burritos and other traditional Mexican fare. The fajitas in general are worth experiencing and the sides are always fresh.
1. El Taco Luchador on 938 Baxter Avenue in Louisville
This is a small place that doesn’t look like much outside, but it is well worth the visit. They have every type of taco you can imagine with a variety of different homemade sauces. ETL has the best fish tacos I’ve had in the city, and sweet potato fries with a unique pineapple dipping sauce. Try a few different types, as it will be hard to make up your mind about which taco to eat. Try a few more next time… and there will be a next time. Taco portions are quite generous and very filling. I highly recommend this place.
Each one of these wonderful Hispanic restaurants offer a great selection at a reasonable price. Portions tend to be very generous, and the food is always fresh and delicious. Homemade sauces will have you looking up recipes, as packaged things will never be the same. Have you been to any of these Mexican restaurants? If so, (or not,) what is your favorite place to get mind blowing Mexican food?
