I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.

Kentucky might be best-known for its rolling blue hills, picturesque lakes, and expansive underworlds, but there’s a lot more geographical variety to the Bluegrass State than that. In Northwest Kentucky, Henderson is an enchanting small town that’s harboring one of our state’s finest hidden gems: John James Audubon State Park. Home to abundant flora and fauna, as well as a thriving wetlands ecosystem, the John James Audubon State Park is one of the most peaceful and pristine places to explore in Kentucky, and this boardwalk trail is the perfect starting point for your adventures.
Would you believe us if we told you that this is Kentucky? (We know - it looks like the Florida Everglades or Louisiana marshlands, doesn't it?)
Welcome to John James Audubon State Park in Henderson, Kentucky. This gem of a park is known for its castle-like nature center and museum and abundance of natural beauty, which is picture-perfect in all seasons of the year.
It's also home to a meandering boardwalk trail that's perfect for hikers of all abilities and skill levels; a trek that showcases the great geographical and topographical diversity of Kentucky, too.
Acquired by the park in 2011, the Audubon Wetlands are a 649-acre site that feature a unique ecosystem of a Bald Cypress Tree slough, shrub wetland, and floodplain forest -- all in one location! And the best part is, you can discover this wondrous ecosystem for yourself along the 1.5-mile boardwalk trail.
This trek ventures through the most compelling landscapes in the park, past abundant flora and fauna; a place teeming with verdant greenery and lush marshlands.
The flat, easy terrain of this 1.5-mile round-trip wetland walk is ADA accessible, and leashed pets and bicycles are welcome. (Pets are not generally permitted at this Kentucky State Park, but happily *are* allowed on this trail!)
Come and discover Kentucky in a wholly new and exciting way along this beautiful boardwalk trail.
Have you strolled the boardwalk trail at John James Audubon State Park before? It truly is a criminally overlooked Kentucky State Park, and it’s absolutely worth discovering for yourself.
