I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
A sweet tooth is something that most people in the nation share, but not everyone. There are some great places to get a sugar fix, but perhaps the best candy store in Kentucky is the historic Muth’s Candies. We’ve all heard the rhyme, “little girls are made of sugar, and spice, and everything nice.” This candy store took all that into consideration. They made it a point to create savory, sweet treats that will sweeten even the most sour personality.
This candy store was the first of its kind in the city.
Muth’s Candies is the dream of WWI Veteran, Rudy Muth. He returned from the war with a desire to create a neighborhood candy shop that would provide handmade candies for the community and visitors. In 1921, that dream became a reality and Muth’s Candies opened their doors to the public.
He and his sister Bell created the candies and ran the shop primarily alone at first. Sometimes the siblings ended up putting in extremely long hours in order to stock the shelves with a variety. They carry chocolates, caramels, taffy, hard candy and bourbon balls.
Rudy and Bell’s mother taught them to love and make candy at an early age. She passed down her knowledge and recipes. The traditions were that of their family, from "most" recipes, to unique new treats. Rudy taught the next round of candy makers himself, to ensure the traditions were continued.
The famed Madjeska’s are a creamy soft butter caramel with a soft marshmallow center. It was created in the 1880s by Anton Busath and was named after Helena Modjeska, a Polish actress. They are delectable and happen to be one of our personal favorites. Occasionally, you will find them at other stores, but Muth’s has the best.
There is a unique variety here of homemade bourbon balls, hand dipped malted milk balls, pretzels, cream eggs of several flavors, including smores, and watermelon salt water taffy. They have taffy of other flavors but the watermelon is just mouthwatering.
...Muth’s can bring back happy memories of picking a favored treat from the local candy store. The worst part is deciding what to buy. They have so many different types of chocolates, creams, jellies, and such, you could spend hours being indecisive. You need to give yourself time to browse and ponder your choices, especially if you have a limited budget.
Every time we walk in Muth’s Candies, we walk into an ambient atmosphere that tempts the senses with sweet sugary ambrosia. If you visit Louisville, you will want to add Muth’s to your list of places to visit. Even if you live several states away, they’ve made it easy to try their sugary treats with online shopping. You have seven pages of unique candies to choose from for delivery, and in-store there is even more candy to choose from.
There are some other candy stores to check out, but Muth’s is the best candy store in Kentucky, according to quite a few readers.
