Whether you’re planning a solo hike or the perfect weekend getaway for the family, Red River Gorge in the Daniel Boone National Forest is where you need to go! This canyon system offers the most beautiful views, as well as hiking trails for both novice and experienced hikers. When you need a quick getaway from city life, this adventure is well worth the two hour drive from Louisville. It’s amazing that such a natural wonderland is right in our own backyard!
First stop: the Daniel Boone Coffee Shoppe & Deli
Make sure you start your day by giving your body a little energy boost before the hike! This cute coffee shop and deli offers all you need for the adventure ahead, including a shop for camping supplies if you forgot any gear! Be sure to check out the shop on your way home too, as they also offer souvenirs to remember the amazing journey.
Make your way through this unique tunnel.
You'll drive through Nada Tunnel on your way through the park. This man-made tunnel is called the "Gateway to Red River Gorge" and is 900 feet long! The tunnel was dug out with dynamite, steam drills, and hand tools in 1910.
Begin your journey on one of the many hiking paths.
There are over 60 miles of trails here, some of which are designated for beginners and others for experienced hikers. Check with the park office for a map of the trail system and for advice on which one to choose. Hiking through the Daniel Boone Forest is incredible and an amazing adventure no matter which path you take.
Walk across natural bridges...

These natural rock bridges are incredible to see, but for those with a fear of heights, don't look down! The Skybridge is the most popular stone bridge in the park. This natural sandstone arch is accessible via a pretty easy hike.
Canoe or kayak down the Red River.
Drift through the bottom of these canyons on the Red River. Kayaking or canoeing through this scenic river provides a relaxing element to your day of adventure.
Once you reach the top, sit back and enjoy the view.
The views are some of the best in the state and definitely one of the most incredible locations to visit near Louisville. It might take some time to reach the top, but once your take in the scenic view of this expansive vista, the journey will be more than worth it.
Wake up to a dazzling sunrise over the canyon.
Backpack camping is allowed in the park, as long as you keep a distance from the trails and cliffs. You can wake up to an incredible view like this one before heading out to explore the canyon system even more. This park will remind you how incredible nature is! It doesn't get any better than this.
