Hiding right off of Frankfort Avenue is a place like no one has seen in Louisville before. Jerry’s Junk is a strange outdoor collection of sculptures, old trains and cars, and other random items that the owner, Jerry Lotz, finds especially interesting. This is not an antique shop or a shop at all. In fact, the property is closed off with beautiful but effective iron gates. Still, from beyond the fence you can make out this wacky statue pretty well.
Most are surprised to see a replica of Lady Liberty while walking down Frankfort Avenue.
Amidst a pile of strange statues, old vehicles, and other odds and ends is a replica of the Statue of Liberty overseeing it all. The property is locked and trespassing is not permitted, unless Jerry Lotz himself decides you're worthy of a tour through his interesting outdoor collection. Still, looking is encouraged, so let's get a better view of one of America's greatest symbols.
Looking closer, you’re going to notice that this isn't your everyday Statue of Liberty replica…
Can you make it out? Beyond the beautiful iron gate is the Statue of Liberty we all know and love-- or is it? Rather than holding the traditional tabula ansata, she's throwing up two fingers for "victory". And if you think her face isn't quite as elegant in this rendition, that's because the artist decided to replace hers with Nixon's. When Jerry first bought the statue, there was only one finger sticking up, and it didn't stand for victory. It was changed due to neighbor complaints soon after.
She lights the way for curious wanderers in the streets.
She's even a functional street light! Here she dimly illuminates the old cars parked outside of Jerry's place.
There are all kinds of interesting finds here.
Date idea: stand outside of Jerry's Junk and play "I Spy". One could probably be preoccupied for a very long time! Take a look at all of the strange collectibles Jerry has found over the years. Although the man might claim to buy and sell, he really only buys, usually. He's so attached to his items because they're each a one-of-a-kind, no matter how strange or silly.
If you're a train enthusiast you'll love this corner.
Here you can admire a train car, several train-crossing signs, and what looks to be an actual train engine. Jerry himself must be somewhat of a train lover too.
E.T. is probably phoning home here.
Jerry found the perfect place for his little alien. I'm sure a large part of the fun is rearranging all of the items exactly how you want them.
And more strange lamps to guide you!
He seems to enjoy these globe lanterns.
Along another side of Jerry's Junk is another Statue of Liberty replica.
You may like this rendition more, or less. This time, her face seems to be normal, and she holds a route 66 sign in one hand while holding the torch in another.
You can find Jerry’s Junk at 1737 Frankfort Ave, Louisville, KY 40206.
