While most people might think of a big, bustling city when they think of Louisville, it is not without its big pockets of nature to lose yourself in. One of the best places in Louisville for the outdoor-inclined is Waverly Park, which is located not far from the infamous, haunted Waverly Hills Sanatorium. (Don’t worry, though, the park itself isn’t haunted… at least we don’t think so!)
This park features an enormous, gorgeous lake, as well as tons of hiking trails. Let’s take a look at all that Waverly has to offer:
Waverly Park is located at 4800 Waverly Park Rd, Louisville, KY 40214, between a quiet neighborhood and a dense forest.
If just sitting and enjoying the lake isn’t enough excitement for you, this 300-acre forest also includes 9.5 miles of hiking trails that provide a view that is simply breathtaking, especially in the fall.
On Halloween night, the park plays host to a 6.66-mile run called "6.66 Miles of Pure Screaming Hell." Participants run the trail all the way up the Sanatorium before coming back down and enjoying a chili supper.
The trails are hikeable all year round (although you have to watch out for ticks and chiggers in the summer).
During your hike, you will most likely encounter some of the native forest animals as well, ranging from birds and deer to wild turkeys, coyotes, and even wild pigs!
The trails around the park have a lot of ups and downs, so they are great for anyone looking for a workout.
