Paris may be far from Kentucky, but one of its most iconic buildings has a replica right here in Kentucky. In Covington, you’ll find the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, which may look oddly familiar. This stunning Basilica stands out, situated on an unassuming Covington street, although you can spot it from the nearby highway. It may be smaller than its counterpart, but Kentucky is lucky to claim it as its own.
In unexpected Covington, right near the Ohio River and downtown Cincinnati, you'll find the majestic Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption. Its architecture stands out amongst the more modest buildings nearby and evokes similarities to the famous Paris cathedral, Notre Dame. It's exterior was indeed modeled after Paris' version, but even at only one third of its size, Covington's Basilica is a true marvel.
To compare the facades, here is a photo of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. While there are differences, you can definitely see the resemblance. Designed by architect and artist Leon Coquard, along with the collaboration of Bishop Camillus Paul Maes, construction began on Kentucky's Cathedral in 1895, with the laying of the cornerstone.
The detail and intricate design of the Cathedral Basilica are unmatched by today's architecture. That may be why construction is technically still not complete, over 100 years later. Finances have, of course, been the biggest issue, along with a number of other road blocks.
The Cathedral's Gothic architecture is nothing like you'll see in more modern buildings and is what makes it such a destination. Twenty-six gargoyles, carved in Italy, adorn the exterior, adding mystery and wonder to this Kentucky landmark.
The interior is just as magnificent as the exterior. Modeled after St. Denis in France, the murals are by Covington native Frank Duveneck and the rest of the space is absolutely awe-inspiring.
While it may seem odd that a Cathedral this grand resides in a rather small Kentucky city, to the people of Covington, it's a crowning jewel to their hometown. The Cathedral welcomes visitors, so you can come witness this "Little Notre Dame" for yourself. Spend time admiring the impressive architecture, history and wonder of this Kentucky sanctuary.
The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption is located at 1101 Madison Avenue Covington, Kentucky 41011. For more information and history of the Cathedral, visit its website here. Have you visited? Maybe attended a mass or a wedding? Share your experience in the comments!
