There are hidden gems all over Kentucky, some more hidden than others. As if from another era, there’s a speakeasy-themed bar in Louisville that also has plenty of appeal for book lovers. Hell or High Water is an underground destination that has book-lined walls, a roaring 20s atmosphere, and is basically every book nerd’s paradise.
Hell or High Water is a somewhat secret destination, tucked away under Louisville's historic Whiskey Row. As you walk along Washington Street, you won't see any flashy signs or really any signs at all that indicate the presence of a cocktail bar. They rely on your curiosity to lead you to this modern-day speakeasy.
Hell or High Water is a bar and lounge that also serves small savory and sweet bites. As it is a small, sit-down establishment, you will want to make reservations ahead of time, no matter the size of your party.
When you arrive, you'll be greeted by a member of the bar's staff and taken down a mysterious set of stairs that lead to a one-of-a-kind setting. The interior is dark, cozy, and draws you in with its beautiful finishings and a wall filled with books. It's the type of place feels like you may have actually read about in a book or seen in a movie.
It's impossible to sit in this underground space and not let your eyes wander around to all of the period details. The rustic dark wood, grand chandelier, and warm, library vibe all make Hell or High Water the perfect spot for drinks with friends.
The cocktail menu is the highlight at this bar, but they also offer beer, wine, and espresso. Every book nerd will appreciate the creativity of the menu’s memorable names and mouthwatering descriptions.
You can also grab a bite to eat while relaxing at your private table or booth. They offer charcuterie, cheeses, and other savory options, as well as a few sweet treats that are ideal for wrapping up a night out in Louisville.
If you're learning about Hell or High Water for the first time, now you’re "in the know!" A Kentucky restaurant as unique as this, with such an endearing atmosphere and memorable menu, should be visited by anyone who appreciates a nod to the past and a wall full of books.
