Kentucky plays host to so many chilling ghost stories that we could probably tell a new one every day of the year. But there are some that are more prominent – and even more believable – and even celebrated at their place of origin. The former home of John Brown, Kentucky’s Founding Father, is the source of one of the most infamous ghost stories in the Bluegrass State. The legend of the Gray Lady at Liberty Hall is the Kentucky ghost story that will leave you absolutely baffled.
John Brown is one of the most famous figures from our state's history, as he played a vital role in ensuring Kentucky became the 15th state in a very new United States of America.
In the late 1700s, John Brown began construction on Liberty Hall in Frankfort, which would become his family's home and the epicenter of the city. After marrying, having a child, and continuing his impressive political career, John Brown retired to his stately home. It was soon after this that tragedy struck and the house became the source of a chilling ghost story.

As the story goes, Margarette Van Wyck Varick, the aunt of John Brown's wife, came to visit from New York. Sadly, she died soon after her arrival and is said to have passed away in one of the upstairs bedrooms of Liberty Hall.
The stories began soon after her death, and many believe that Ms. Varick continues to stick around the house in order to fulfill her promise of helping around the estate. Mary Mason Scott, shown in the photo above, was the first family member to share reports of seeing the ghost. She said she was awakened in the middle of the night by an elderly woman in a gray dress.
There are tours and presentations that are centered around this ghostly tale and many continue to report sightings of her in the stairwell or peering out the window.
Liberty Hall is also tied to another ghost story; that of a Spanish Opera star who disappeared on the grounds of the home in the early 1800s.
But it's the story of the Gray Lady, who many believe to be a friendly spirit, simply trying to be helpful throughout the property. Of course the only way to find out if all of this is true is to visit this Kentucky Historic Site for yourself.
The story of the Gray Lady at Liberty Hall is one that will surely be told for generations to come. Have you visited this historic site? Have you caught a glimpse of the Gray Lady? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
