Many popular restaurants come and go in Kentucky and there are definitely more than a few that we wish would find their way back into our lives. Perhaps there is a restaurant from your younger years that you used to love, but then closed its doors and you’ve been craving it ever since. If that’s the case for you and a famous Kaelin’s cheeseburger, then you’re in luck. Unofficially known as the “birthplace of the cheeseburger,” Kaelin’s Restaurant was a family favorite for generations. And now 80/20 at Kaelin’s in Kentucky is open and ready for you to come relive those memories and satisfy those long-running cravings.
Kaelin's Restaurant dates back to 1934 when it first opened in Louisville and it continued as an area favorite for over 70 years.
As a family restaurant, generations enjoyed meals here and it came to be known as the "birthplace of the cheeseburger." Whether or not that's true, Kentucky will always claim it is. Kaelin's was also the first place that Colonel Sanders served up his famous fried chicken.
There was obviously a lot to love about the Kaelin's of the past, so much so that two locals decided to give it a new life.
In 2018 they opened up 80/20 at Kaelin's, located in the same spot as the original restaurant. They began to grill up burgers - and many other delicious items - and all in a unique atmopshere that's a delightful mix of old and new.

The burger is definitely one of the most popular items on the menu, whether you visit for brunch, lunch, or dinner.
They offer several varieties, or you can build your own. They each come with fries and we recommend going with a Classic Cheeseburger for your first visit.
It has been completely renovated and now includes a mix of modern and rustic decor. The dining room is large (they do take reservations or you can take your chance with just showing up) and they also have a charming space for private parties and events.
Perhaps the best feature of the restaurant, aside from the food, is the bar area and outdoor patio.
The bar opens up to the patio and this area is first come first served. If you can snag a spot at the bar or on the patio, you'll enjoy a great meal in a memorable atmosphere in the heart of Louisville.
Before you leave, be sure to visit the adjacent malt shop and ice cream parlor.
Despite its differences, we still think you'll love stepping back in time at Kaelin's and experiencing a new take on a classic. The burgers are still mouthwatering, they still offer fried chicken, and you will be welcomed with a smile at this historic destination that once again has a future.
