There are many places throughout Kentucky where you can step back in time and experience our state’s history in an interactive way. One of the most popular destinations to do so is Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg. This 3,000-acre site is a beautiful property to visit any time of year, but during the month of December, it literally lights up. A trip to this illuminated old-fashioned village in Kentucky is truly a magical holiday experience that’s fun for everyone.
Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill was home to the third largest Shaker community in the United States between 1805 and 1910. As this old-fashioned village is located near Harrodsburg - Kentucky’s oldest city - the area is a popular destination for history buffs and those who enjoy unique experiences in the Bluegrass State.
The Village was restored many years ago and is now a beautiful property with many hands-on learning opportunities, hiking trails, a restaurant, an inn, and many seasonal events, especially around the holidays.
Beginning December 1st and running through the end of the month, Shaker Village celebrates the holidays with charming decorations and plenty of old-fashioned fun. Visitors are welcome to stroll around the scenic property on Sunday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday & Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Many enjoy taking in the sights of the illuminated village, which is filled with twinkling lights. The historic buildings and picturesque fencing are all lit up for the holidays, and you can experience them on foot or by hopping on a horse-drawn wagon ride.
When you visit, you'll be able to warm up by exploring the interiors of the buildings, which are also decorated for the holidays. Be sure to check out the Village's website (linked below) for a full list of the must-see spots on the property.
Refreshments are offered during the holiday events, but if you want a mouthwatering meal, we suggest making reservations at The Trustees Table. Learn more about this delicious restaurant here.
A visit to Shaker Village is a must-see for Kentuckians in every season, but be sure to add it to your December calendar, as well. This old-fashioned village and scenic property is magical in the wintertime and you won't want to miss it.
