It doesn’t take a history buff to know that Kentucky is filled with historical sites where you can step back in time and experience our state’s past. There are countless museums and destinations where you can get hands-on with history, and whether you’re passionate about the past or not, they are still exciting places to experience firsthand. Located in the very tip of southwestern Kentucky, Columbus-Belmont State Park may just be our state’s best-kept secret. This scenic park overlooks the Mississippi River and the history of this land is downright fascinating.
Columbus-Belmont State Park is located in the hilltop city of Columbus, tucked into the corner of southwestern Kentucky. Unless you live in this region, chances are this park has remained a secret destination - but it's definitely worth a visit.
The park is situated overlooking the Mississippi River, which many tend to forget even borders Kentucky. The Mighty Mississippi, including the land where this park is located, has long played a crucial part in America's history. The town of Columbus was actually once such an important city that many argued it should be the capital of the country, rather than Washington, D.C.!
The history of this land actually connects all the way back to the 1670s when it was explored by Frenchmen Marquette and Joliet. But the park's historical sites are mainly tied to its role within the Civil War, which was quite substantial. When the land was held as a Confederate fort, a chain was extended across the Mississippi to prevent Union forces from passing. A piece of that chain, as well as an anchor and other period pieces, can all be viewed at Columbus-Belmont State Park.
Also on the 160 acres of the park is a trail that winds through the landscape and past other Civil War-era sites, monuments, and relics. This beautiful park is a wonderful opportunity to step back in time.
When you plan on visiting, be sure to check on any upcoming events such as Civil War reenactments. There is also a museum that is open seasonally, and you can learn about all of those features on the park's website (linked below).
In addition to the history of the park, the views of the river are truly what makes this land unique. There are several benches and picnic tables that are perfect for sitting, relaxing, and taking in the one-of-a-kind scenery.
The sights are also spectacular from the park's campground, which is open year round. There are 38 river cliff campsites with hookups and a central service station complete with restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities.
For an even more unique overnight adventure, spend the night in this tiny cabin for two! Although it may not have been built during the Civil War, it's still an interesting way to experience the history of the park and the surrounding land. You can check availability and reservation information for this cabin by calling the park at (270) 677-2327.
