It’s a well-known fact that you could hike for years straight in Kentucky and still have more incredible trails from which to choose. Areas such as Red River Gorge, Cumberland Falls and Daniel Boone National Forest are popular and for good reason. But southwest of Lexington, outside of the small town of Wilmore, is a somewhat hidden trail that is just as spectacular. Asbury Trails will transport you to another world and you may never want to come back.
Located along the winding Kentucky River, Asbury Trails is a nature-lovers paradise. This 1.7-mile out and back hike has a little bit of everything and definitely feels like you've escaped everyday life.
There are ongoing views of the river, some between trees and some more sweeping from atop the ridge. The nearby water keeps you on track and provides relaxing scenery for the duration of the hike.
As the trail narrows, you'll pass large rock formations (one known as "The Great Wall") that seem to come out of nowhere. They are a reminder of the diversity of Kentucky's landscape and beauty.
On most days, you'll be able to catch a waterfall (or two or three), as they rush down the rocks. The sound of the water, along with the mist they give off, only adds to the ambiance of the trail.
The unique formations seem to be from another world and will definitely make your mind wonder how this land was once used. It's rather untouched (and needs to stay that way), which is what makes this hidden hike so appealing.
Asbury Trails is rated as a moderate hike, but most agree that there are sections that can be tough, especially in muddy conditions. It's a good balance of challenge and serenity and provides a natural oasis to discover in the heart of Kentucky.
