Kentucky’s many lakes are popular in the summer, but they definitely shouldn’t be ignored in the fall. During this season, when our state’s beautiful landscape becomes painted with vibrant color, our lakes are the perfect backdrop to take it all in. One particular lake within the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is simply breathtaking in the fall. The Hematite Lake Trail is a moderate hike that’s a delightful way to spend an autumn day.
Within the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, you'll find more than 500 miles of trails and 200 miles of scenic roads that show off the natural beauty of Kentucky.
The entire area is magical in the fall, but the 2.2-mile Hematite Lake Trail is a great way to experience the brilliant fall color, along with lakefront views.

The trail is well-known for its boardwalk, that allows you to quite literally walk on water.
But the rest of the loop trail is just as enchanting. There are sections of the trail that are somewhat difficult to pass, especially after heavy rain. But with a moderate rating, many would argue that it's generally a fairly easy trail to enjoy.
As you can see from the map above, the trail follows the banks of Hematite Lake, which are especially beautiful in the peak of autumn.
Throughout the trail, you will wander through the woods and witness a wide variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and wildflowers. In some sections, you'll have peaks of the lake, like above, and then other sections will open up for scenic, sweeping views of the colorful banks.
If you're looking for a spectacular place to view fall foliage this year, as well as a little exercise, check out the Hematite Trail.
This popular spot in Land Between the Lakes will likely have peak color around the middle of October, so plan accordingly and enjoy the natural beauty of our state.
The Hematite Lake Trail – and all of Land Between the Lakes – comes alive in the fall, and should be on your fall bucket list in Kentucky. Have you hiked this trail during the fall? Share your experience with us in the comments!
