I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
Waterfall chasing is a full-time business here in Kentucky. Home to the Niagara of the South, the Bluegrass State also lays claim to impressively tall waterfalls, walk-behind waterfalls, andwaterfall swimming holes. So imagine our surprise to discover a new-to-us waterfall, and not only that, but a walk-behind waterfall in Kentucky that basically requires no hiking. What is this wondrous waterfall, you say? Keep reading to find out!
Broke Leg Falls is a naturally beautiful area located in Menifee County, a region in Eastern Kentucky that's been through quite a bit over the years.
In its aftermath, Kentuckians did what they do best, banding together and rebuilding something even better and more beautiful. Today, the only sign of the former destruction is quite literally a sign at the parking lot.
The walk to the falls is just a few steps -- but it's literally stairsteps, so you'll want to take your time and definitely use the handrail. Keep in mind, you'll need to come back up to get out.
If, however, you wear proper hiking gear, seeing Broke Leg Falls frozen is truly something special.
The views from below are beautiful and there are some areas to explore, even behind the waterfall. This can be very slippery and dangerous, so always exercise caution. There are many stories as to why this is called Broke Leg Falls and you do not want to contribute to those tales.
In addition to the headlining falls, there are numerous smaller cascades along the canyon walls; after a heavy rain, they can be quite rushing and impressive to see!
There's something about seeing a waterfall in the wild that's at once inspiring and grounding. Come to Menifee County for a look at Broke Leg Falls, a hidden gem of a waterfall in Kentucky that's worth chasing.
