In a state that’s known for its rolling hills of horse farms, Kentucky also offers a surprising number of fascinating natural arches and bridges. Especially throughout the Red River Gorge area, you’ll find many hiking trails that include one or more of these arches, as well as other features that make this one of the most popular places for hiking in the state. If you’re in the area and you think you’ve seen them all, be sure to check out Hidden Arch in Kentucky. This 2-mile hike is fairly easy – although it does have a lot of stairs – and it’s a nice little adventure to add to your day of exploring the area.
The trail to Hidden Arch in Kentucky can be found near Pine Ridge and begins like many other hikes in the Red River Gorge area. You'll start out under a canopy of trees and especially in the off season, you're likely to find some peace and quiet along this less popular trail.
The trail is a two-mile loop that takes you out to the arch and past other unique rock formations and small creeks. If you visit in the winter or after rain, be prepared for mud and potentially slippery conditions.
The trail is rated moderate, mainly due to the stairs you'll take to reach the arch. The stairs wrap around the rock and take you up and further along the trail.
Once you reach the arch, you'll notice it's definitely not the biggest in the area, but it still has so much character. It almost makes the trail feel like a natural playground as you tunnel under it and admire its unique features.
The trail continues and loops back around and is fairly easy to follow. If you take young children or dogs (on a leash is allowed), be sure to watch them closely as there are drop offs and slippery rock surfaces.
You can also catch some views from here, which is an added bonus. Or add this trail on to another in the area and make the adventure even longer. You can learn more about how to do this on the Daniel Boone National Forest website.
Hidden Arch in Kentucky is one of many of its kind throughout the state, but since it can be reached on a fairly short and easy hike, it’s worth checking out. Have you made the trek along this stairway to see Hidden Arch? Tell us about your adventure in the comments!
