Eastern Kentucky is known for its beautiful landscape and plethora of outdoor activity, but did you know that there is a museum, nestled in the city of Prestonsburg? The East Kentucky Science Center and Planetarium is an interactive museum where your entire family can learn and enjoy time together at both the traveling exhibits and space-oriented shows.
Located on the campus of Big Sandy Community and Technical College, the East Kentucky Science Center and Planetarium (EKSC) is a crucial part of the education system in the Eastern part of the state. It's a popular field trip and school-based destination, but it is also open to the public and is a great way to spend a few hours as a family.
The center is open Tuesday - Friday from 1pm to 4pm and on Saturdays from Noon to 4pm. There are interactive activities for the kids and plenty of learning experiences for everyone.
The museum itself is somewhat small, but now through August the center is hosting the Hubble Traveling Exhibit. The 2,200-square-foot exhibit immerses visitors in the magnificence and mystery of the Hubble Space Telescope and definitely adds a unique experience to the museum.
The highlight of the center and the main reason to visit is definitely the planetarium. This immersion experience will take you into space with one of their shows and it also features a variety of laser shows set to classic, popular music. They are both informative and entertaining for the entire family. The planetarium show takes place at 2pm during the week and 12:30pm and 2pm on Saturdays. The laser show is at 3:15pm Tuesday through Saturday.
