I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. I have lived elsewhere twice, but keep coming back. I'm a video editor and freelance writer who enjoys watching people wearing University of Louisville uniforms excel at sports, scaling the faces of large rocks, and hanging out with my border collie/laborador/cattle dog mutt thingy that I have.
Grilled cheese is a classic. You really can’t go wrong with it. You can make it as creative or a simple as you want, but no matter what, it’s always a reliable sandwich option. There are a few chains around Kentucky that serve creative grilled cheeses, but a historic, local bakery and deli in Kentucky serves ones that are to die for. You’ve got to check it out.
This is Kirchhoff's Bakery and Deli. This historic (and tasty!) restaurant is located in Paducah.
The bakery was started when a Prussian immigrant named Franz Kirchhoff and his wife came to Paducah in 1873. The bakery is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
You can always just get a classic grilled cheese, which consists of cheddar cheese on their homemade bread. Get a bowl of hot soup or a crisp salad to accompany it.
For those looking for more than just a standard grilled cheese, they have many creative variations of the sandwich to try, both for meat lovers and vegetarians.
A trip to Kirchhoff's is not complete without a stop in the bakery to sample one of their amazing pastries. Get one to go if you're too full from that grilled cheese sandwich you just ate. You'll be seriously missing out if you don't.
