When you’re craving a taste of the Old World, Kentucky has several great restaurants serving up European fare. There’s a German restaurant in Louisville that’s serving up some of the best bratwurst, schnitzel, and stroganoff in the state, and just wait til you get a look at the desserts!
Welcome to Gasthaus! This charming German restaurant is owned by the Greipel family, who all hail from Germany. They opened the restaurant in 1993, and have been getting positive reviews from the Louisville community ever since.
Address: 4812 Brownsboro Center, Louisville, KY 40207
Don't let the fact that this restaurant is located in a shopping center fool you - the space has been completely transformed into an Old-World wonderland with two little chalets inside. It's filled with memorabilia from the family's life in Germany.
There's plenty of chicken and beef on the menu, as well, accompanied by traditional side dishes like spätzle. Everything on the Gasthaus menu comes from family recipes, so it's all as authentic as can be.
It's all made from scratch by Michael Greipel and his Executive Chef Jason Malone, using the finest ingredients.
What pairs perfectly with German food? German beer and wine, of course! Gasthaus has a long list of red and white wines from the Old World, as well as more than a dozen imported beers.
The desserts here are as legendary as the food, and you'll definitely want to try at least one while you're here. The dessert table has different offerings every evening, but the strawberry Napoleon is one of the favorites.
The desserts are all made in-house daily by the Greipel family, and they're absolutely divine! If you're too full after dinner to try one, take one to go - you won't regret it.
Gasthaus is open for dinner only, Tuesday through Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Reservations are highly recommended.
