In an age where every place you go seems to cost admission, it’s nice to have a destination that you can roam and explore, without paying a cent. At The Arboretum State Botanical Garden of Kentucky, you can enjoy the peaceful pathways, natural surroundings and a few activities for free. The UK Arboretum is a delightful activity to enjoy on your own, as well with family and friends.
Since 1991, The Arboretum has welcomed visitors into its picturesque landscape to relax, learn and explore. The Arboretum celebrates nature and stands to create a respectful bond between humans and their natural world. It is also a center for environmental research and conservation efforts.
There is no charge to enter the grounds of the Arboretum, so you are free to roam the beautiful walkways, trails and gardens. Because it does take a great effort to continue growth and sustain the space, there is a spot where you may leave a donation.
If you stop in the visitor's center, pick up info on the three self-guided tours. These are free for visitors and provide a great structure and learning opportunity for your visit. These tours will have you exploring the native trees and shrubs of Kentucky, meticulously maintained within the arboretum.
A favorite part of the Arboretum is the Walk Across Kentucky. On this two-mile paved walkway, you'll experience a living museum of the diverse native Kentucky plants. The seven physiographic regions of Kentucky are represented and it really is like seeing all of Kentucky's landscapes in one captivating walk.
Within the Arboretum's Rose Garden, you'll find the feature of the Flight 5191 sculpture, which commemorates those who lost their lives in the Flight 5191 accident at Bluegrass Airport on August 27, 2006. It's a stunning piece and a peaceful focal point to the lush garden.
Of course the flowers, gardens, water features and natural landscapes are the main features of a visit to the Arboretum. While they do offer many free activities throughout the year, there are also other things you can do for a small fee. The Children's Garden does require a small payment, as do other events held at various times. But to visit the Arboretum itself and experience its true Kentucky beauty, won't cost you a cent.
The UK Arboretum is open daily from dawn until dusk, but check their website here for more specifics on hours, tours and other activities. The Arboretum is located at 500 Alumni Drive Lexington, KY 40503. Have you spent time here? Do you have any other favorite free activities in Kentucky? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
