Fort Boonesborough State Park is a fascinating park and campground southeast of Lexington.
It's a popular spot for campers and history buffs, but also those looking for access to the Kentucky River. It's an all-around great destination for families, and fall may be the ideal time to visit.
As a fort that dates back to Daniel Boone and the 18th century, it already has a haunting atmosphere, especially on a grey, fall day.
When you do visit the park, consider arriving earlier to walk around the fort and check out the property. It's open to visitors through the month of October.
