Kentucky may be world-famous for bourbon, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a great brew in the Bluegrass. There are numerous acclaimed breweries in the Bluegrass and even an entire Brewgrass Trail where one can dive glass-first into the burgeoning craft beer scene in Kentucky. In Northern Kentucky, Turtleback Ridge Brewery is a small, collectively-owned farmstead where folks can enjoy a delightful farm-to-glass brewing experience.
Nestled in lovely Robertson County, Kentucky, Turtleback Ridge is a small, collectively-owned farmstead that's peak Bluegrass beauty.
The farm is managed by Kevin, Susan, and Keegan McGee who have made it their mission to be stewards of the land, always contributing to the biodiversity and resiliency of this idyllic corner of Kentucky.
For Bluegrass beer enthusiasts, the most exciting feature of this farm is the taproom, located about a half-mile down a gravel road and nestled within 100 acres of woods.
This farm-to-glass brewery in Kentucky specializes in delicious beers and ciders, with a full listing of available brews on the website. As with Kentucky bourbons, the farmhouse ales take considerable time to age and condition.
Take, for example, the "Appalachian Surrealism" brew. This is a blended farmhouse ale brewed with barley from Southfork Malthouse and barrel fermented with the farm's own house culture. It's blended from seven different barrels ranging in age from 6-18 months old, and bottle conditioned for nearly nine months before its release. Talk about a labor of love!
Speaking of love, in true #KentuckyProud fashion, the brews at Turtleback Ridge often take inspiration from local crops and seasonal produce, as with this yummy Maple Oatmeal Stout!
Pair your farm-to-glass brews with a vibrant charcuterie board full of delicious meats, cheeses, crackers, and spreads, and you've the makings of a delightful afternoon picnic!
And then, of course, as afternoon turns to evening, the skies above the Bluegrass put on a marvelous show that's best-enjoyed with a brew in hand and great company beside you.
Did you know about this tiny-but-mighty Kentucky brewery? Turtleback Ridge Brewery is a delightful slice of the Bluegrass brewery scene in the most beautiful, bucolic of settings.
