I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
Though many are saddened to see the summer disappear, Kentucky’s next season is an extremely special time of year. Autumn replaces the lush greens of our rolling hills with vibrant shades of orange, gold, bronze, deep reds, and chocolate browns. The fall season brings out the natural beauty of our forests and landscapes, providing a breathtaking display for all to see.
Here are 10 things that make fall a wonderful season to celebrate in Kentucky:
The first official practice of the Kentucky Wildcats in Rupp Arena is October 16th, with tickets being available on October 2nd. Over 35,000 people come to this free event, and tickets go fast.
College football starts in early September. It's pretty widely known that Kentucky is a somewhat sport enthused state, being home to both the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville.
This beautiful area in Versailles has some fantastic baked goods for locals and visitors. It's also home to a multitude of festivals, including Apple Days, Scarecrow, Fall Fest, and Ole’ Cider, starting September 12th and continuing till November.
The colors of fall are a huge draw here. We have so many forests that the colors literally blanket the state. The crisp autumn colors look even more vivid against the green of the grass. It's an incredible display of vibrant colors that seems to leap out at you… especially when the leaves start to fall.
Fall fishing offers a different type of experience than fishing in the hotter temperatures. Those who enjoy it will often find themselves much more relaxed than on those hot summer days. If it’s a little chilly, take a thermos of coffee. If it's warmer, take your favorite cola or beer. Either way, fishing during the fall is a wonderful way to relax.
There are an abundance of fall festivals scattered all across the state. Locals and visitors can enjoy music, fruits, fair style food, homemade goodies, arts, crafts, and more all throughout the season. Each county has its own list of fun festivals. The temperature is cooler and the scenery is different, making for incredible hikes in any of our state parks and forests. Getting a close up view of the changing trees and flora gives hikers an entirely different perspective than during spring or summer hikes.
Kentucky is quite renowned for horseracing, and though Keeneland is not the Kentucky Derby, it's a popular attraction. The meets begin October 2nd and continue till October 24th.
The weather of a Kentucky fall tends to be a comfortable temperature where 3 quarter length sleeves or a light jacket are all that's necessary. It's the perfect medium between summer and winter, and eases us into the cold gradually.
In my youth, my Grannie used to travel from Alabama to Kentucky each fall season. She did this so my Dad could drive her through some of the state parks to look at the trees. Like me and many others, she was mesmerized by the incredible array of colored leaves on nature’s display. Kentucky opens up each season like a fresh pallet of color for an artist, no matter where in the state you live. Please share your favorite things about Kentucky’s fall season in the comments below.
