It’s no secret we love train rides around here and a trip on the Big South Fork Scenic Railway is one of the best in Kentucky. We’ve featured many of their excursions previously and since they’ve recently added a new trip, we knew Kentuckians would be eager to hear about it. This new train ride in Kentucky, the Fall Colors Express, begins in October and takes you through the gorgeous fall foliage of our state. But it will also now stop at the Barthell Coal Camp, making this a unique and historic outing in Kentucky this fall.
Hopefully by now you've heard of Kentucky's Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. It's an area of our state that also extends into Tennessee and while its name may be long and hard to remember, a trip here is always unforgettable.
As one of the most beautiful areas to explore in our state, there is so much to do here. And one of the favorite activities is a train ride with the Big South Fork Scenic Railway.
The Railway offers train rides in Kentucky throughout the year, but we happen to think fall is the best season to experience one.
A train ride through Big South Fork isn't a new excursion, but they now offer the Fall Colors Express, which is new to the scenic line up of events. It also now includes a stop at a historic coal mine, which you can tour.

The scenery on any of the train rides with this railroad is breathtaking, but it's especially vibrant in the fall.
As Kentucky's only mountain train, the colorful leaves, rocky hillsides, and rushing creeks all make this a one-of-a-kind experience. Fall colors are expected to peak in late October or even early November this year, but any ride through the month of October should be filled with fall foliage.
The mine and camp have been incredibly restored and show what life was like in the early 1900s. You can add a guided tour to your train ride excursion for a small extra fee, and it's definitely worth it.
On the tour, you'll learn about the history of this mine and even get to step a little ways inside.
