I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. I have lived elsewhere twice, but keep coming back. I'm a video editor and freelance writer who enjoys watching people wearing University of Louisville uniforms excel at sports, scaling the faces of large rocks, and hanging out with my border collie/laborador/cattle dog mutt thingy that I have.
Here in the Bluegrass State, there are many towns that are unique and fascinating. Whether they are large, small, or in between, these towns help tell the story of Kentucky’s history. However, if there is only one town in the state that looks like something out of a fairy tale, it would definitely be this old river town in northern Kentucky.
Augusta is located in Bracken County, right on the Ohio River. It's only about 43 miles away from Cincinnati, but as you stroll along the peaceful banks of this little town, it's hard to imagine that a huge metropolis is only about an hour downstream.
According to Census information, Augusta has a population of about 1,190. Many well-known people have lived in Augusta, including famous actor George Clooney, who attended Augusta High School. George's famous aunt, Rosemary Clooney, and his father, Nick Clooney, are also from Augusta. Another notable person who was born here is Heather French Henry, who was crowned Miss America in 2000.
This old river town was founded by Philip Buckner in 1786, so it is brimming with history. Originally it served as a trading post along the Ohio River.
This picturesque log cabin, which dates back to the 1700s, is the perfect place to sell antiques and collectibles, and is located in Augusta's historic downtown.
