When it comes to hidden gems, Kentucky is full of them. We have tons of underrated restaurants, little-known parks and hiking trails, and even a menagerie of animals that will bring out your wild side! Henry’s Ark is located in Prospect, just outside of Louisville, and you’re sure to love a visit to this farm that rescues a variety of exotic animals.
Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, since the time of publication, Henry’s Ark has since closed.
Though located only 20 minutes from Louisville, the small town of Prospect feels more like a rural retreat - especially at Henry’s Ark. This menagerie’s story began over 25 years ago, when the property’s owner, Henry Wallace, began to take in animals that no one else wanted. His passion project eventually became the non-profit exists today.
Henry's Ark serves as an animal refuge for both exotic animals and those you'd typically find on a farm. The driveway and parking lot are not well marked, but the farm is open to the public on Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The variety of animals at Henry's Ark changes all the time, but you're sure to find a unique mixture. This is not a petting zoo or really a zoo at all, but it does provide a one-of-a-kind environment in which to witness these wild animals.
The property has changed over the years, but it is still a charming place to visit. The animals roam behind fencing, in various ponds, and even along some of the same paths where you'll walk.
The peacocks at Henry's Ark have always been a favorite, and you may spot a few of them strutting around the farm. Be sure to have your camera ready if they decide to fan out their feathers.
You may also see alpaca, goats, pigs, bison, turkeys, and even a dog or two. Please keep in mind that you are not allowed to feed these animals, so do not bring any sort of food onto the property.
Some of the animals are extremely friendly, while others will be shy. As with any animal, they can be unpredictable, so keep that in mind as you approach any of the wildlife at Henry's Ark.
Henry's Ark relies on donations from those who visit to remain in operation, so be sure to bring cash. There is not a set price for admission, but give generously if you can - the volunteers and staff of this hidden gem work hard to maintain it as a Kentucky tradition.
Henry’s Ark is the definition of a hidden gem and remains a unique spot in Kentucky to see exotic animals that are happy to call this refuge home. Have you visited Henry’s Ark? Let us know in the comments!
