As an adult, sometimes it seems like all of the fun attractions are geared toward kids. Of course we love a good family-friendly spot, but sometimes it’s nice to go play somewhere that was built just for adults and older youngsters. In Louisville, you’ll find exactly this, and in the most surprising place – underground. Mega Cavern is a massive underground attraction that is filled with adventurous fun and excitement.
The Louisville Mega Cavern is a unique adventure underground that is the perfect adult playground. The history of the cavern itself is very interesting and I highly recommend reading all about it on their website before visiting. It was acquired in 1989 by private investors who had a vision for the space that was as massive as the cavern itself. Because Mega Cavern is considered a building, it is actually the largest one in the entire state of Kentucky!
While the history may be intriguing, the real draw is the action that takes place underground. The most popular activity is the zip line course, which has you flying through the dimly lit cavern, experiencing a ride you'll never forget. Featuring six zip lines, including a dual run and two challenge bridges, this excursion is a must-do in Kentucky.
Mega Cavern is also home to the ONLY fully underground aerial ropes challenge course in the world! You can spend up to three hours on the 76 challenging elements. This experience will have you feeling like a kid again, climbing through a play set or swinging from the monkey bars.
For something less strenuous, try the Electric Bike Tour. This 1.5 hour tour is the only chance you have to see the entire cavern and you'll even spend a moment in complete darkness. You may get a little dirty riding along with your guide, but the adventure is worth it.
If your childhood was spent making ramps in the street and popping wheelies in parking lots, then you will love Mega Cavern's underground bike park - the largest indoor park in the world! Bike rentals are available first come, first serve and you do not need a reservation, although you may want to make one. Pedal away on over 320,000 square feet including over 45 trails, Jump Lines, Pump Tracks, Dual Slalom, BMX, Cross Country and Single Track, all in a former limestone cavern 100 feet sub-surface.
And for the most relaxing of the activities, hop aboard the Mega Tram and learn all about the history and structure of the cavern. The 60-70 minute tour is filled with history, science, mystery and surprises!
The next time you're looking for an excuse to have an adult adventure, try the Mega Cavern. It's a playground of epic proportions, all hidden beneath the streets of Louisville.
While the Mega Cavern is the perfect adult escape, they do allow children to participate and the age requirements are specific to each activity. For more info on the Cavern, including age/height/weight requirements, cost and ticket information, check out their website here. Lousiville’s Mega Cavern is located at 1841 Taylor Ave. Louisville, KY 40213.
