Kentucky is a state that is filled with a rich history, from ancient and prehistoric fossils to the expansion and settlement of the pioneer days — and it is also home to several battles and other incidents of the Civil War, too. Some places, like today’s feature destination, still have their earliest buildings standing to this day, combining state history and Southern charm all in one place. Welcome to the enchanting and historic town of Owenton, Kentucky.
Owenton is a tiny, remote town that was originally founded in 1822 and was named after Col. Abraham Owen, who was a pioneer that died at the Battle of Tippecanoe.
While it was later incorporated in 1828, the town never "boomed" since a railroad was never built to connect to it and it’s not on the riverbank for river trade.
Nevertheless, Owenton became the county seat of Owen County and many of its original buildings stand to this day, like the Owen County Jail, which was built in 1874.
In front of the jail is the original Owen County Courthouse, a place that's also in use to this day. Owenton likes to keep its history alive by preserving places like this. Much of the county saw skirmishes and guerrilla warfare during the Civil War.
Every year, Owenton hosts the Owen County Fair, surrounded by its historic buildings and bringing together art, crafts, antiques, food, and fun from all over this historic county. There’s even a local horse show -- because, Kentucky.
Seminary Street is the heart of Owenton and you’ll find charming cafes, shops, and restaurants with a down-home feel and friendly service. Add it all up, and this little Kentucky town is certainly worth a day trip!
