I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
Finding a dream spot in Kentucky is not really a challenge. Realistically, around half our state is blanketed in forest, gorgeous lakes and waterways. The hard part is picking which Kentucky dream spot you want to linger at a while. We have Mammoth Cave, Black Mountain, Red River Gorge and more, each worthy of a visit or 10. However, one of the dreamiest places to visit in the Bluegrass is the renowned Land Between the Lakes Recreation Area, which has a little bit of everything Kentucky.
The land is snuggled in between Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley, and a few smaller lakes, like Bards. It is special, not only due to Mother Nature’s handiwork, but because it is the largest manmade peninsula in the United States. In 1963, John F Kennedy realized the potential of this breathtaking Kentucky spot. He declared the Land Between the Lakes, partially located at 238 Visitors Center Drive in Golden Pond Kentucky, a national recreation area. The gorgeous surroundings just fan out from that focal point, providing miles of nothing but amazing scenery and life.
The close proximity of Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley and the other bodies of water allows visitors to choose from many spots with no regrets. Nature lovers will find no shortage of serene spots to bask in the tranquility of the earth. There are places where you won’t even hear a horn blow, nor the echo of traffic.
You can have a romantic rendezvous at one of the many available rental cabins. A simple search provides pages of available options, each competing to best the last. You can opt for a lake view or get more secluded in the forest. Wifi and modern amenities are available in most the cabins. Some make romance easy, providing hot tubs and heart stopping views.
Not everyone wants to camp in a cabin. Those who like pitching a tent will be thrilled with the variety of prospects available for "roughing it." There is no shortage of quiet spots just waiting to get you away from the sounds of city life. You can literally meld into your surroundings and get in touch with nature the old fashioned way, by experiencing it.
The freedom of floating on the water is yours to be had. If you have a boat, great! If not, no worries. You will find a variety of places on both lakes that offer rentals for blocks of time or days. Almost any boating desire can be met when it comes to size and basic design. Rentals range from small fishing boats to pontoons and such. Fish, swim or just find a dream spot to float about in the sun.
You don’t have to have a boat to fish and swim at either lake. There are designated areas for both, along with other options. The fish have had a long winter and now they are ready for some of the tasty treats we use for bait. Swimming is just incredibly refreshing, especially on a hot Kentucky day.
These are just a few reasons why Land Between the Lakes is a dream spot in Kentucky. Where would you consider a dream spot to absorb the natural environment of our beautiful state?
