Transylvania University is a beautiful, historic destination in the heart of Lexington. There are many interesting stories tied to the university and one feature it often gets attention for is the Monroe Moosnick Medical and Science Museum.

The Monroe Moosnick Medical and Science Museum is a collection of artifacts, anatomical models, and botanical paintings that were used in the teachings of the medical school during the 1800s. These items were mostly obtained in Europe between 1820 and 1850 and were then brought to Transylvania University and its cutting-edge medical program.

The museum is named after a chemistry professor who worked at the school for decades. The instruments on display were used by students at what was one of the first medical schools in the country.

Many of the artifacts are extremely rare and the collection of items from the era is said to be one of the best in the world. Possibly the most intriguing piece is a Wax Medical Venus (shown below), which was state-of-the-art at the time and was used for students to practice and learn.
