I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
Some of Kentucky’s streets have been around for nearly a century. Each street got its name for a reason, though some passed on with the originators. Many roads were named because of familiar surroundings, like a bridge, tree, something someone found, or perhaps even after a critter often seen in the vicinity. A few of these crazy street names have even crazier stories told by the locals.
Here are 10 crazy street names that might make you shake your head:
This Marion County road leads to the Pilot Knob Cemetery, where long term locals do not travel at night. This is home to the grave of Mary Evelyn Ford, the renowned Witch Girl buried in 1916, who is said to haunt the cemetery, along with something that haunts her.
This supposedly haunted road in Alexandria leads to the renowned Witches Hill, where 3 witches were supposedly buried. Many locals have strange tales to tell about the area, as there are 3 areas or raised ground, coinciding with the lore.
This Knox County road has some lovely rural scenery, and a very old cemetery. A home or two along this route are said to have possible haunting, and suffer from strange sounds and bumps in the night.
This road in Jefferson County makes for a beautiful drive, with only two lanes and a canopy of trees. However, over the decades tales have been told of a long black hearse that appears and disappears, sometimes running cars off the road.
This peaceful road is in Lawrenceburg. However, Lick Skillet was quite a popular name decades ago, as there are others in Brandenburg, Olmstead, and Shepherdsville.
The incredible views from this oddly named road in Knott County make it well worth an afternoon drive, especially as the leaves start to change during the fall.
These are a few of Kentucky’s unique street names and stories to boot. There were quite a few racier road names that could have been added, but one can just take a drive through the Rockcastle County for those colorful bits of history.
