I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
There’s no shortage of winsome small towns in Kentucky, nor is the Bluegrass lacking in scenic beauty. So what do you get when you combine the two? Why, the charming and historic city of Monticello — that’s what! This adorable little mountain town makes a perfect detour on your way to the Kentucky Mountains, and is sure to become one of your new favorite places in the state.
Monticello is a sweet little town located in the southern region of Kentucky. It's known as the "Houseboat Capital of the World," as the town boasts several houseboat manufacturers.
Pictured here is a log cabin in downtown Monticello, built in the early 19th century by local settler "Racoon" John Smith. The cabin was originally located in Horse Hollow on the Little South Fork River, and today sits right in town for visitors to admire.

Monticello is home to numerous historic buildings; the West-Metcalfe House is another notable site. It was the first brick house in this region of Kentucky, and it also served as Confederate headquarters and a battlefield hospital during the Battle of Mill Springs.
History aside, Monticello is a delightful little place to explore. In the downtown area, The Quilt Shoppe is one-of-a-kind; this place celebrates the beautiful art and craft of quilting.
While you're in town, keep an eye out for these massive Adirondack chairs, part of a city-wide project to support local businesses and bolster town spirit.
And when your stomach starts talking, head to Black Stallion Steak House Restaurant, a classic steakhouse serving up delicious, stick-to-your-ribs kind of fare.
