Kentucky is known ’round the world for its epic underground caverns, with one mammoth cave boasting a particularly impressive resume. But there’s another cave in Kentucky that’s also quite extraordinary, with its own record-breaking claims to fame, too. The Louisville Mega Cavern is a massive underworld that’s a true superlative superstar. Not only is it the largest building in Kentucky (more on that momentarily), but it’s also home to the only fully underground zip line in the entire world.
There are lots of underground adventures to be had in Kentucky, with Mammoth Cave obviously standing out as a bucket-list must.
The Louisville Mega Cavern was originally a utilized as a limestone quarry, and from 1930-1970, huge volumes of natural materials were extracted and removed, essentially creating an expansive underground grotto.
Today, it's a place for adventure seekers and explorers, with some of the most incredible experiences in the world. And no -- this isn't an exaggeration!
The Louisville Mega Cavern is home to the only fully underground zip line on the planet. There are six zip lines located 100 feet above the canyon floor, with two swinging bridges, and immeasurable adventure.
But that's not the only superlative up the Mega Cavern's sleeve. It boasts the world’s only fully underground aerial ropes challenge course, the largest indoor bike park in the world, and the only fully underground holiday light display on the planet.
There's one more feather in the Mega Cavern's cap: it's actually the largest building in Kentucky. Yes -- the Mega Cavern is classified by the Metro Louisville Government and the State of Kentucky as a building -- and it even boasts its own building code!
In a state that’s world famous for its caves, perhaps it should come as no surprise that Kentucky is also to the one and only underground zip line in the world. Regardless, it’s a pretty cool claim to fame, and definitely an adventure that belongs on your Bluegrass bucket list! Visit the Louisville Mega Cavern website to learn more and plan your underground excursion.
