Many of Kentucky’s small towns are our state’s best-kept secrets, as they offer hospitality, delicious local restaurants, charming downtowns, and access to natural wonders in the Bluegrass State. If you grew up in one of these towns, you may not think they are anything special, but many outsiders see something different. The city of Somerset in south-central Kentucky is perfectly located for a variety of fun attractions, and this tiny town is secretly one of the best places in Kentucky.
Somerset is a charming small town in Pulaski County, home to just over 10,000 people. This place packs a big punch, however, with plenty to offer for both locals and visitors.
One of its most well-known attractions is SomerSplash Waterpark, which welcomes visitors from all over the region. It's a great spot to cool off in the summer, and you can read all about it in our previous article here.
Somerset is also known as the "Car Cruise Capital of Kentucky," and you can experience this event for yourself on select nights in April through October. Downtown becomes an outdoor car show with a different theme each month. Next year has already been planned and you can learn more about this event and what to expect here.
While enjoying all of these fun-filled spots around town, you can't miss a stop at Amon's Sugar Shack. This family-owned local favorite not only has incredible sweets, but also serves up wonderful comfort food in a nostalgic atmosphere.
Both within Somerset and in the surrounding area, you'll find a number of parks. These vary in size and features, but you will not be bored when spending time outside. Elgie Woods Piano Park, shown below, is possibly the most unique and offers live music throughout the year.
Another park that's very close to town is General Burnside Island State Park. This one-of-a-kind property is a park on an island, and it is filled with beautiful scenery and fascinating history.
Another stop to make in the great outdoors near Somerset is the shortest creek in the world. Short Creek is only about 150 feet long, but it’s one of the most picturesque spots in the area. It's on private property, but the owners allow respectful visitors to visit this small wonder - you can read all about it in our previous article here.
Somerset is also perfectly located next to Daniel Boone National Forest, one of Kentucky's most prized features. Here you can hike to waterfalls, along natural bridges, through gorges, and much more, and the tiny town of Somerset gives you access to it all.
