Kentucky is a great place to explore the outdoors and you can find hiking trails that will lead you into a gorge, behind a waterfall, along a lake, and even up a mountain. There are many mountain trails throughout the state, but one is not only stunning, but it’s also fairly accessible for all who wish to give it a try. The Indian Fort Lookout Trail within the Berea College Forest is the one mountain trail in Kentucky that everyone absolutely must hike.
Berea College Forest in central Kentucky is one of the oldest managed private forests in the country. The area offers more than 7 miles of hiking trails and some of the best views in the state.
There are a few options when it comes to trails here, but one that often gets overlooked—and definitely shouldn't—is the Indian Fort Mountain Trail. The East and West Pinnacles are spectacular as well, but this short hike has its own appeal.

The Hopewell, Adena, and Shawnee Native Americans made Indian Fort Mountain their home and it worked well in protecting them and providing what they needed.
In fact, the entire area is still very much an active archeological site, meaning you absolutely must stay on the designated trails. But as you walk through the woods, you can imagine what life must have been like living within the cliffs and valleys of the forest.
This central trail is steep, but there are opportunities to stop and rest. When the trail splits again, you will continue to go along the central path. The trail then leads to the edge of a cliff where you must choose left or right. Head left to the lookout for incredible views of the valley below.
The other trails within the forest are equally as beautiful and interesting. Try both the West and East Pinnacle Trails, as well as the hikes to Eagle's Nest and Buzzard's Roost.
You can't go wrong with any of the trails in this picturesque area of Kentucky. Enjoy a memorable mountain hike to the Indian Fort Lookout, as well as along the other trails, and get a true taste of Kentucky's natural beauty.
