One of Kentucky’s many assets is its countless waterways, including lakes, rivers, creeks, and waterfalls. If you love water, our landlocked state is actually a great place to be. However, one thing we don’t have is an ocean, but you can still find yourself under the sea at one fun-filled Kentucky destination. The Newport Aquarium is a can’t-miss attraction that is filled with unique things to see and do, and this one-of-a-kind aquarium is a place the whole family will love.
The Newport Aquarium is situated right on the Ohio River within Newport on the Levee. It has emerged over the years as an award-winning attraction and nationwide destination, and every Kentuckian should visit at least once.
After entering the lobby of the aquarium, you descend under the sea to the many unique attractions. There is a wide variety of fish, sharks, turtles, alligators, penguins, and more, and the entire visit is an immersive experience.
Some of the most popular features are the tunnels that take you right through the tanks, where you can view the animals swimming all around you. It's remarkable that you can walk underneath a shark or stand atop a glass pane as an alligator walks beneath you.
Guests of all ages will enjoy the aquarium, as its a magical place and unlike any other in our region. While you can work your way through all of the attractions in just a couple of hours, be sure to take your time and plan ahead for any special events, such as feedings and presentations.
The aquarium is divided into different sections, and a favorite is definitely Gator Alley. Here you can visit with Snowball and Snowflake, two rare white alligators that call Newport home.
Toward the end of the aquarium is another favorite area: Penguin Palooza. This room is set up like a theater, where you can sit and watch these playful penguins as they always put on an entertaining show.
Right before you exit the exhibits, test your courage on the Shark Bridge. It's the world's first suspended rope bridge that hovers over the shark tank and it's such an exciting way to wrap up your visit.
The Newport Aquarium also hosts many themed events and activities throughout the year, so keep an eye on their calendar for special guests like mermaids, Scuba Santa, and more. The whole family will love visiting, as there are many hands-on experiences for kids of all ages.
