I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
We all have life moments when getting out of the house for fun seems mandatory, but a tight budget gives us pause. Thankfully, there is no shortage of entertaining things to do in Kentucky for $10 or less. It doesn’t matter if you want to go solo, with family, friends, or that special someone, the Bluegrass has reasonably priced entertainment for one and all.
Here are 10 awesome activities you can do in Kentucky for $10 or less:
This Newport theater is a favorite for all who attend. Adults can see an evening movie for only $10.59, but matinees are available for $9. You can bring food inside, or indulge at their bar for alcohol or sodas. You have to pay for parking, but get reimbursed by the theater. They have not 1, but 3 IMAX theaters and make a great place to catch a film at One Levee Way.
Amish communities, such as the one in Crittenden County, which has over 600 residents, several schools and many stores, can teach us a lot about living off the land. You can even pick up a hand crafted souvenir.
Visiting a park is another great, inexpensive way to have fun with the family and friends. You can pack up a picnic and visit beautiful acres of land all across the Bluegrass. Most everyone is familiar with Red River Gorge, but there is also Bernheim Forest in Clermont/Shepherdsville, Daniel Boone National Forest in Morehead, Manchester, London and Whitley City, Mammoth Cave in Mammoth Cave and/or Jefferson National Forest in Whitesburg. *Please note Lake/River Parks are listed separately.
Get in touch with your roots and visit the Bluegrass museum in Owensboro. It's filled with information, instruments, sheets of music, clothing, and more, giving all who walk through the door a view of what Bluegrass music is all about. Adults get in for only $6.
102 West First Street in Morehead is home to this art center where everyone gets in for free. There are over 1400 self taught, handmade pieces of permanent art, along with rotating collections.
This Prospect petting zoo of sorts gives families and friends the opportunity to experience a variety of animals. Children can pet animals they might otherwise never even see, especially if they happen to live in the city. It's located at 7801 Rose Island Road in Prospect and fees are simply a requested $10 donation.
Adults get in here at #1 Sportsman Lane in Frankfort for only $4 each, seniors and Children for $3 and $2. Visitors can go for an educational visit or just enjoy nature in a variety of areas. They have fishing lakes, hiking trails, wildlife and more, which can be entertaining for the entire family.
A planetarium can offer a few hours of incredible star gazing, concert laser shows, and other amazing shows on a HUGE screen with surround sound. The East Kentucky Science Center at Big Sandyin Prestonburg, Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium in Louisville and the Arnim D. Hummel in Richmond all offer unique, affordable entertainment. Admission usually runs around $6 to $9 per adult, with seniors and children discounted.
It doesn’t cost anything other than gas money and food to spend a day at any one of Kentucky’s beautiful lakes and rivers. Anyone can enjoy a swimmingly fun afternoon at Barren River Lake , Lake Cumberland, Cave Run, Buckhorn, Paintsville, Nolin, Laurel River, Dewey, Herrington or Kentucky Lake. For those who prefer rivers, try Cumberland, Salt, Ohio, Big Sandy, Kentucky, Mississippi, or Red Rivers. There are a few others, but I believe this covers a large portion of the Bluegrass.
The Kentucky Splash Water Park at 1050 Highway 92 West in Williamsburg is only $10 for a entire day of water family fun. If you want water slides and splash pools, this is the place to be.
Having fun on a budget isn’t that hard if you know where to look. In Kentucky, you never have to look too far.
