Mammoth Cave is the superlative superstar of the Bluegrass, earning the state world-wide acclaim and attention. A bucket-list must, the cavern system features over 400 miles of underground caverns and passageways, with more miles being added all the time. In addition to its epic underground tours, aboveground adventures abound at Mammoth Cave, too. The trails are spectacular, and the national park is, pardon the pun, a stellar place for stargazing.
With regard to specific numbers, the cavern system features some 400 miles of underground caverns and passageways, with more miles being added all the time. We alluded to this above, but in 2021, Mammoth Cave actually "grew" longer with the discovery of an additional eight miles of passages by the Cave Research Foundation, bringing Mammoth Cave's total underground mileage to 420 known miles of passages! What does this mean? Well, more opportunities to explore! Mammoth Cave offers a variety of tours -- visitors can choose from mile-long treks to half-day, lantern-lit expeditions. While exploring Mammoth Cave's above-ground expanse is free and self-guided; cave access is by ranger-guided tour only, and advanced reservations are strongly recommend.
If you prefer to explore above ground, you'll find amazing hikes *and* bike trails in Mammoth Cave; with regard to the latter, there are two beautiful bike trails located within the National Park. Big Hollow North and South Loop trails total about 10 miles, and can be customized to fit whatever length of ride you're in the mood for. The Mammoth Cave Railroad Hike and Bike Trail is 18 miles round trip, making it a fun day trip adventure for more seasoned cyclists.
