I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
Kentucky can be a very exciting place to grow up, depending on the area you happen to live in. Most people think there’s always something to do in the city. It is the same way in the country, just on a different level. My parents were country folk, and we lived in a rural location.
Here are 11 thoughts most everyone has when they grow up in rural Kentucky:
In the country, the rodeo is often considered a very exciting event. Most kids dream of going at least once, and being a cowboy/cowgirl wouldn’t be so bad either.
Just like most everyone, Kentuckians dream of being successful in life. It matters not their career of choice, only that they grow to be renowned and well off.
Those who grew up in the country sometimes wish we had theaters like bigger cities. We tend to have movie rentals instead of movie theaters, which, compared to an IMAX just isn’t the same.
There have been quite a few famous people born in Kentucky, Johnny Depp, Hunter Thompson, George Clooney, and others. It is not surprising young Kentuckians dream of getting in the ranks of stars.
At some point we ALL go exploring. It might be in the woods, an old abandoned house/farm, a cave, or a tunnel. Whatever the case, we likely have dreams of making a unique discovery to awe our peers, and ourselves.
Silence can become deafening if you yearn for the noise of others and activities. Country living tends to be peaceful and lack consistent noise, excluding the wind rustling through the trees, coyotes singing, and crickets. City sounds, though often a curiosity, can be somewhat overwhelming.
When the tallest building you see is around 3 stories, you often think about what the view is like from the skyscrapers in the city. The Ferris Wheel can be the closet you get to that for years.
Realistically, Kentuckian thoughts aren’t going to be much different than any kid growing up. We all dreamed of being good at something, being rich, being famous, having fun forever, or just making our parents proud. If you have another dream of childhood to add to the list, please feel free to comment.
