I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
When you ask people what they think of doing first in Kentucky, their responses are usually Kentucky Derby, Wildcat basketball, or trying a Mint Julep. There is a lot more to the Bluegrass State than that. We have some of the most beautiful land in the US, and there is plenty to do on it.
Here are 10 fun things you probably never thought about doing in Kentucky:
The Badgett Playhouse in Grand Rivers offers a few hours of Hee Haw like entertainment. This has great singers, dancers, comedians, and all around entertainment.
Several lakes in Kentucky offer boat rentals, but you can take a ride on an authentic steam boat in Louisville on the Belle of Louisville. Dinner is available along with the ride.
You cannot actually catch a wave, but Bruce’s Boards in Campbellsville offers surf boarding with a paddle. It is quite exhilarating to stand on a surf board and paddle around a lake. It provides an interesting perspective of the water and wildlife one doesn’t see otherwise.
Just Kik-N-It Ranch Outfitters in Livingston offers reasonable kayak rentals to explore the local rivers. They also offer biking, hiking, camping, and other gear to get you through an outdoor adventure.
This Prestonsburg entertainment center is the Appalachian's answer to the Grand Ole’ Opra House. Visitors not only see some amazing art from the locals, but also can see entertaining shows of both music and acting.
The Louisville MegaCavern offers all types of activities, including zip lining across a vast opening with an unseen bottom. Bernheim Forest also has Zip lining available across the woodlands. Both offer an amazing view.
The Wigwam Village in Cave City gives visitors the chance to rest up in an unusual setting, a tee pee. Though these are a little better furnished then the average wigwam, a unique experience is still to be had there.
Wight Meyer Vineyard and Winery in Shepherdsville offers a flourishing vineyard tour and wine tasting for around $5. This is some of the best wine you’ll ever taste in such a very unlikely environment.
The Ben E Clement Mineral Museum gives us a unique view of the world of mining. Afterwards, visitors can mine for some gems themselves in the Columbia Mine. You will usually come out with something. People have found Amethyst and a few other unique gems there.
There is no disputing Kentucky is beautiful country. We have no shortage of things to do here and some of them wouldn’t come to mind right off.
