I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
Life is full of lessons. Even after becoming adults, most of us still continue growing and developing. However, a childhood spent in a rural county in Kentucky often teaches us a few things one doesn’t get to experience in bigger cities. Most of us grow up pretty normal, but with the addition of a few extra life experiences that one just doesn’t have in large metropolitan areas.
Here are 10 lessons you learn growing up in a rural county in Kentucky:
Rubbing salt in an open wound may be painful, but it can destroy any remnants of infection on the spot. Hot salt water will also help draw infections out of an open wound.
They're typically not stinging insects sent forth from hell to reign terror down on mankind… unless you mess with their nest. Otherwise, they just buzz around, eat Cicadas, and stare at you.
These tiny biting bugs take up residence ON us, leaving bumps of varying sizes, depending on our reaction. Suffocating them by applying things like nail polish to the bump seems to be the best cure.
Pretty weeds, but if you touch them you'll likely catch Chiggers.
Just to be clear, some of the lessons do cross over between suburbs and rural areas, especially if an elder happens to be from the country. There are also parents that feel having a diverse knowledge base can be beneficial, which makes sense in today’s evolving world. If you grew up in a rural county, or have an interesting life lesson to share, we’d love to hear about it in the comments below.
