Born and raised Kansan, Clarisa has lived in both tiny towns and cities during their time here in the Sunflower State. As a busy mother of one crazy kid, two cats, and two geckos, they write whenever there is spare time.
Some might think that there’s not a lot of options in small towns, or that the food might not be up to par with the usual city eateries, however, that’s definitely not true! As a matter of fact, all seven of these family kitchens are serving home-style cuisine to die for. No doubt you should add them all to your Kansas restaurant bucket lists. Otherwise, you might be missing out on a new favorite! In no particular order, here are today’s small town highlights.
Here at Kate's, the portions are great and the food is deliciously homemade, which is all you need when it comes to food these days. However, the outside is pretty unassuming, so make sure you're looking with your nose, not your eyes.
Next up on the list is Jake and Chet's with their wonderful chicken fried chicken and also the to-die-for fries. There might not be many places to eat in Wakeeney, but this is a prime spot if you're looking for home-cooked food from family kitchens in this small town.
In my opinion, I'd eat at Granny's anytime -- and I don't mean my own grandma's house. These biscuits and much more are waiting for you at this delectable restaurant in Great Bend!
Though it definitely sounds like something you'd find in a small town, that doesn't mean their taste or portions are small! In addition, the staff are friendly as can be, and the prices can't be beat!

5. The Rusty Tractor - 410 N Main St Kensington, KS
Home cooking done well lives in the Rusty Tractor's guidebook, and they don't often disappoint. In any case, this spot is the go-to restaurant in the area. They've got a funky style and tasty plates - what else could you want?
6. Cattleman's Cafe II - 744 E Pancake Blvd Liberal, KS
First and foremost, the chicken fried steak here is on my personal top five for Kansas eateries. It's always fresh, crispy, and juicy all at once! In addition, their portions and atmosphere go right along with all the other family kitchens you've eaten in before. (Tip: get the fried mushrooms with whatever you order!)
7. Meridy's Restaurant and Lounge - 1220 S Fossil St Russell, KS
Meridy's is known for steak, and steak they do -- very well, in fact. Another great perk to dining here is their salad bar or their buffet, which never leaves you unsatisfied. Everything feels homemade, which makes you feel at home. What could be better?
