Once a restaurant has been around for a while, they essentially become part of a state’s history. Meetings, events, and entire communities come together around restaurants, and if they’ve been around for decades, the restaurant can easily become a statewide destination spot. As for the restaurants that have stood the test of time, we’ll always stop by on our way through.
If you like mountain oysters or good burgers and fries, you'll appreciate a little spot called Prairie Nut Hut. They've been open since the 1950s and serving fried delights ever since.
For classic chicken, you'll want to consider Olpe Chicken House. They've been open since 1934, and have more than established their place in our restaurant lists.
Also on our list is Chicken Mary's, a highlight in Pittsburg for any traveler looking for chicken with fixings like spaghetti since 1966. If you're hungry coming through here, make sure to stop by.
Another good spot to visit is Ty's Diner, a Wichita area restaurant since the 50s. Though they are more of a hamburger joint, they have a small menu full of the things Kansans love to eat the most. We could never ask them to change!
Dating back to 1857 as a tavern, this Kansas staple restaurant is a must-try if you love home cooked meals and history. Through a few bumps and hurdles, the historic Hays House has stayed open through quite a few events.
Giant pork tenderloin sandwiches have been a thing here for a while, and Christy's has been here for decades serving great sandwiches and more. We can't get enough of this sandwich, and having double the meat is half of the draw.
Since 1922, sliders have been sliding out of Cozy Inn Burgers like crazy. They're made so fast it's like a factory, and a sack of them will fill your car with the smell everyone can recognize and a taste Kansas craves.
Last but never least we have Dagwood's, a cafe that's been running in Kansas since 1938, serving up all sorts of homemade meals. Though breakfast is by far their best, stop by anytime for a taste of classic Kansas goodness.
Do you think we missed any of the most important restaurants? If you’d add in a particular restaurant to this list, let us know in the comments on Facebook or through our Nomination Page. We’d love to hear what old restaurants in Kansas deserve a seat in the spotlight,
