Do you know what our state mammal is? American bison, known as bison bison scientifically, are the largest animal mascot of Kansas. In addition to sunflowers, you used to find these guys on every prairie they could live on. Today, wild herds are protected and kept a close eye on for education programs. Welcome to Sandsage Bison Range, a beautiful area of Kansas that's made up of sandsage prairie, a unique area of Kansas that's being preserved by organizations like this.
That's right! This buffalo herd has been here as long as many of us can remember, and it's also the oldest publicly owned bison herd in Kansas, having been here since the 1920s.
